How do I change the tagline, copyright or any other text?

All of the default theme text can be found and changed in the theme's languages area which you can get to by following these steps:

  1. Click on Online store in the sidebar menu of your Shopify admin area
  2. Click on Themes in the submenu that appears
  3. Click the Actions button for the theme you'd like to edit to open the theme's actions menu
  4. Click Edit language from the menu

The tagline and copyright text can both be found at the bottom of the General tab.

Click the Edit language link from the theme actions menu
Scroll to the bottom of the General tab to edit the tagline and copyright text
How do I access the theme settings?

You can customize your theme using the built-in settings by following these steps:

  1. Click on Online store in the sidebar menu of your Shopify admin area
  2. Click on Themes in the submenu that appears
  3. Click the Customize theme for the theme you'd like to edit
Click the Customize theme button from the Themes page in your Shopify admin

The settings panel is divided into two tabs: Sections and General settings.

The General settings tab contains settings that are 'global', meaning they're used throughout the theme. These including things such as colors, typography, currencies and the sidebar locations.

The Sections settings are specific to certain sections and are 'context aware' so they only appear when the section they relate to is visible in the online preview area.

For example, in order to access the content settings for the sidebar you must:

  1. Navigate to a page of your shop (in the live preview area) that displays the sidebar
  2. Click on the Sections tab at the top of the settings panel
  3. Click on the Sidebar section (this section will not be visible unless the sidebar itself is displayed in the live preview area)

Sections that must be visible in the live preview area in order for their content settings to appear under the Sections tab include: the home page, collection pages, product detail pages, pages with the sidebar, the blog page, blog posts and the cart page.

A look at the theme settings panel. Section settings will only appear when the relevant content is visible in the live preview area.
How do I edit the code in the theme files?

Shopify's template editor allows you to directly edit the code for any of the theme's files including the CSS and JavaScript.

Note that we can't fix attempted customizations that break the theme so please make sure you're confident in what you're doing before making any changes!

To access the template editor:

  1. Click on Online store in the sidebar menu of your Shopify admin area
  2. Click on Themes in the submenu that appears
  3. Click the Actions button for the theme you'd like to edit to open the theme's actions menu
  4. Click Edit HTML/CSS link from the menu
Click the Edit HTML/CSS link from the theme actions menu
How do I add custom CSS?

The theme includes an asset file called theme-custom.scss.liquid that makes adding in your own custom CSS simple. The file gets loaded in after all of the theme's CSS so that you can easily override any of the theme's defaults.

To add your CSS:

  1. Click on Online store in the sidebar menu of your Shopify admin area
  2. Click on Themes in the submenu that appears
  3. Click the Actions button for the theme you'd like to edit
  4. Click Edit HTML/CSS link from the actions menu
  5. Click on the Assets folder in the files list
  6. Click on the theme-custom.scss.liquid file to open it in the editor
How do I add custom JavaScript?

The theme includes an asset file called theme-custom.js that makes adding in your own custom JavaScript simple.

To add your JavaScript:

  6. Click on the theme-custom.js file to open it in the editor

Note for adding JavaScript outside of the theme-custom.js file: the theme includes its own version of jQuery but it's run in no conflict mode so the $ alias is not globallay available.

If you're adding script code to a template file (e.g. from following a tutorial or installing an app) and it's not working, try making the $ alias globally avaialble by adding this code to your theme-custom.js file:

window.$ = jQuery;

Do you offer a free trial for your Providence theme?

Yes! You can try Providence for free by clicking the Preview in your store button on the Theme Store overview page.

You can try the theme for as long as you like but Shopify does impose a few restrictions that are removed as soon as you purchase it. The restrictions include not being able to publish the theme to use on your 'live' shop and not being able to edit the theme code.

Do you plan to release any more themes?

Absolutely! Our top priority has been keeping Providence on the cutting edge of features and best web practices (we've updated it over 20 times in the last two years including two complete rebuilds!) but we absolutely will be releasing new themes in the near future. Keep checking back here for details.

Why is the information on your site so outdated?

We're extremely sorry for this. We've been so busy with new projects that our site has slowly fallen into a state of disrepair. We have a lot of big things coming soon and one of them is a completely new site that'll be full of current information and theme documentation. If all goes to plan it'll be launching Q3 this year.

How do I update my theme?

We periodically release theme updates to fix bugs, add new features and/or simply keep the theme up to date with the latest best web practices.

These theme updates are not automatically applied to your existing theme (see explanation below) nor does Shopify provide a way to manually run updates on your installed themes.

In fact, you're not really updating your existing theme at all but instead upgrading by installing a fresh copy of the latest version.

Because of this, you will have to redo any customizations you've made to the theme.

Any HTML, Liquid or CSS you've written will have to be redone or copied over. If you prefer the latter route, there's a fantastic file comparision app called Kaleidoscope that can make things quite a bit easier. Simply drag in a file or folder from your existing theme and then drag in the corrosponding file or folder from the new version and you'll instantly be able to see the differences. It can even copy the changes over for you.

The good news is that, since themes only control the look and functionality of your shop, you won't lose any of the content you've created. All of your products, collections, pages, blog posts and navigation menus will remain untouched.

Why are there no automatic theme updates in Shopify?

Themes are very commonly customized by their shop owners and there's no way to simply incorporate the theme updates around those customizations. Software can be updated automatically because users aren't able to modify the underlying code. When a software update is released, it knows exactly what existed before it and what's been changed since.

Themes, however, are entirely different. They're meant to be customized to suit your needs and reflect your brand. If Shopify were to run automatic updates on themes, the updated version wouldn't be able to tell what was original code from the version before it and what was added by the shop owner. It would have to overwrite everything and the shop owner would lose all of their hard work.

The upgrade process

Ready to upgrade? Great! Here's how:

  1. Re-install Providence from the Shopify Theme Store
Theme updates are free forever so you won't be charged again. The latest version of Providence will simply be added to your unpublished themes section in the Themes area of your Shopify admin.
  2. Copy any customizations from your existing version to the new version
  3. Preview the changes that you have made by clicking on the Preview link.
  4. When your new theme is ready, publish it!. The old theme will become unpublished but dont' delete it just yet. If you've missed copying anything over it'll be handy to have for reference.
